5 Questions with NCCI’s Brian Stein on Motor Vehicle Accidents, AIS Session

08 May, 2025 Frank Ferreri

NCCI's Annual Insights Symposium is just over the horizon, tackling issues across the industry, including motor vehicle accident claims, something Assistant Actuary Brian Stein will cover in his session, Driving Risk: Trends in Motor Vehicle Accidents.

Stein answered a few questions we had about the session.

Q. Why is the topic of this session important for the industry?

BS: Motor vehicle accidents remain a challenge for the industry and can result in especially costly claims. Additionally, these accidents haven’t shown the same reduction in frequency that other workers compensation hazards have.

Q. Who stands to gain the most from attending this session?

BS: The insights I’ll share in this session should be of particular interest to those stakeholders that may have exposure to the transportation sector.

But really, anyone that drives stands to benefit from hearing the analysis and insights. After internalizing the research, I’ve tried to improve my own driving habits. And as you’ll see at AIS, lots of different jobs send workers on the road.

Q. In a nutshell, what will this session cover?

BS: Why motor vehicle accidents result in more severe claims, what’s kept their frequency from declining, and how that might change in the next few years.

Q. What about your journey in the industry has been the key (or keys) for your understanding this topic and explaining it to others?

BS: My 11 years at NCCI have included contributions across all the insights and analysis we provide to stakeholders. Every state has a story, and the work NCCI does helps uncover and tell this story. This involves drilling down into key cost drivers and explaining them to audiences of a variety of backgrounds, not at all unlike what we do at AIS.

Q. What about your role in the industry makes you proud to be delivering this session to the AIS audience?

BS: Objective analysis in support of the workers compensation industry is what we do at NCCI. I am honored to be able to shine a light on the important topic of motor vehicle accidents and highlight some of the potential ways being explored across the industry to increase safety. After all, that’s what it’s all about—getting more workers home safely at the end of their day.
