Red Bluff, CA (WorkersCompensation.com) – A former employee of a California Walmart distribution center is dead after he opened fire in his former workplace over the weekend, killing one and injuring six others.

Tahama County Sheriff’s Office identified the shooter as Louis Lane, 31.

According to Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston, Lane entered the parking lot of the distribution center some time before 3:30 p.m. Saturday and circled the lot four times before ramming his truck into the lobby of the building. At that point, the truck caught on fire and Lane exited the truck armed with a semi-automatic rifle. Lane then entered the distribution center and began shooting at random.

As law enforcement arrived, Lane returned to the parking lot and engaged in a shoot-out with local law enforcement. After an exchange of between 20 and 30 rounds, police shot Lane, and transported him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Tehama County Sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Walmart employee Martin Haro Lozano was injured in the shooting and taken to a local hospital where he later died.

Six other Walmart employees were taken to the hospital with mild to moderate injuries, the Sheriff’s office said.

According to police, Lane was employed at the distribution center until February of last year, when he was fired for not showing up for a shift.

Walmart said they were “deeply saddened by this tragic incident,” in a statement released over the weekend. “Our focus is on supporting our associates, as well as their families and coworkers in the facility.”
