Arlington, VA (WorkersCompensation.com) – A new study released by the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of America indicates that over half of highway construction workers are involved in motor vehicle accidents. The April survey was initiated by a new media campaign that the AGC is launching to urge drivers to be cautious and alert in work zones. AGC polled over 400 highway construction contractors for the study.

The report showed that 67 percent of roadway contractors had experienced vehicles crashing into their work zones so far in 2019. Of those crashes, 70 percent resulted in injuries to either operators or persons traveling in the vehicle. Road workers made up 28 percent of the injuries and 8 percent of the fatalities in those crashes.

According to the information from the ACG website, the percentage for 2019 is 20 percent higher than it was in 2015, and 29 percent higher than 2016 indicating a frightening trend in highway safety.

In California, 41 percent of construction firms have experienced 5 or more crashes in the past 12 months. Of those polled, contractors cited the need for stricter laws on cell phone use, police presence, and closing roads or detouring traffic as contributors to safer work zones. An overwhelming 89 percent indicated that barrier use would prevent crashes, but cited money and time involved as obstructions for their use.

The AGC is the leading organization representing over 26,000 construction firms in the US. You can review the full report and individual states statistics on the AGC website
