Sarasota, FL (WorkersCompensation.com) –Recent statistics have shown that around 30 percent of radiologists are using AI to analyze imaging studies such as X-rays and CT scans. That percentage could be drastically increasing, according to a recent Google announcement.  Released earlier this week, Bayer and Google Cloud Next announced their collaboration in the development of AI tools for radiologists.

Google Cloud is a virtual public platform that contains a whole host of services including but not limited to storage, application development, and AI services. Included in the platform are multiple AI modules with various function focuses.

Cloud Healthcare API is one module that allows for gathering, classing, and analyzing healthcare data and integrating that information with other healthcare applications or programs. Also used in other industries, Vertex AI is a module that is a machine learning (ML) platform that allows users to train and deploy ML and AI applications with customized language. The BigQuery module allows AI analytics across multiple platforms and applications. Chronicle is the module that helps the data safe, with abilities to analyze all network traffic that has been accessed.

Bayer plans to use the applications available on the Google Cloud to further advance and deploy their AI healthcare platforms which specialize in radiology. The platform will have three main goals. Analyzing and experimenting with data will allow users to explore and extract information from scientific studies, and review AI data analysis done within the platform. Building and data validation will allow developers to vet out solutions and programming, and generate the needed documentation for compliance. Last, healthcare and related companies will be able to launch the developed AI solutions with continuous monitoring, error detection, and improvements.

Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud believes that the initiative will ultimately help eliminate tasks contributing to burnout stating, “Radiologists and other clinicians face burnout due to the sheer volume of work they face every day. Gen AI can help tackle repetitive tasks and provide insights into massive data sets, saving valuable time and helping to positively impact patient outcomes.”

Nelson Ambrogio, President of Radiology at Bayer believes that their collaboration will allow healthcare to better manage large amounts of data previously not accessible, “Through the collaboration with Google Cloud, our joint efforts will help organizations in the healthcare and life science industry transform the growing amounts of data into valuable and impactful insights, saving radiologists time and helping them optimize their important work for the benefit of patients.”

According to statistics from Arcadia, healthcare data accounts for around 30 percent of the world’s total data volume, with a forecasted increase to 36 percent next year. Around 90 percent of healthcare data is made up of medical imaging. Per the World Health Organization, there are approximately 3.6 billion diagnostic medical exams, such as x-rays, MRIs, and CT scans, performed each year.
