Atlanta Man Pleads Guilty In $300,000 Healthcare Scheme

Atlanta, GA (WorkersCompensation.com) – The US Department Of Justice issued a press release on a $300,000 healthcare fraud case. Michael Bang, originally from Mesa Arizona, pleaded guilty to healthcare fraud charges involving Colorado Public Employees Retirement Association (“COPERA”) and three Atlanta area pharmacies. Bang was indicted on 20 counts of health care fraud, aggravated identity theft, and wire fraud. Authorities say he stole $300,000 from COPERA from 2014 to 2017 through fraudulent means.

According to the investigation, Bang submitted reimbursement forms through the pharmacy portion of his COPERA coverage, PERACare. Express Scripts is the administrator for PERACare. Bang would receive a medication, but would alter the reimbursement form to include a more expensive drug than the one he received. Bang went so far as to forge pharmacists’ signatures, and alter prescription numbers. Additionally, authorities say he sought reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses that never occurred.

“Falsifying prescriptions in order to generate illicit profits at the expense of taxpayers will not be tolerated and the FBI will pursue anyone who chooses to do so,” said Chris Hacker, Special Agent in Charge of FBI Atlanta. “Bang was driven by greed and he will now be held accountable for his transgressions.”

Bang will appear before U.S. District Judge Steve C. Jones on October 24th for sentencing. Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan J. Huschka is the prosecuting attorney for the case, with full FBI Investigation.
