Five Things You Need to Know: 5/1, Tuesday Edition

Sarasota, FL (WorkersCompensation.com) -

 1) WorkersCompensation.com News Center: Two New Features

WorkersCompensation.com recently introduced two new options for readers, the first: National Workers' Comp Event Calendar. “…This would provide others tasked with scheduling events a single, one stop resource to make sure nothing conflicts with the dates they would like to use. And of course, it could persuade them to use alternate dates if important activities already occupy that spot,” President and CEO Bob Wilson wrote in a recent Cluttered Desk blog post. In a few weeks, private accounts can be enabled so organizers can add/edit events, while we can reach out to readers to spread the word. A contact form will also be created for organizations who’d like to post their events as well for free. ALSO: On the News Center home page, there is an option on the upper right hand side of the page to “Submit a News Tip,” for readers interested in contacting us with leads.

2) FDA Regulators to Meet in June Regarding CBD Oil, Could Mean Changes in Access for Certain States

Many states, including Idaho, with a hazy future in medical marijuana, might be one step closer to utilizing Cannabidiol (CBD oil), as “…An FDA advisory panel voted unanimously in favor of the experimental medication known as Epidiolex, a drug derived from the cannabis plant, but contains no traces of THC or the compound that gets you high in marijuana,” writes Dean Johnson of KTVB. “…FDA regulators will meet in June to decide whether or not to approve the drug. If the FDA follows the panel’s recommendation, Epidiolex would become the first drug derived from the cannabis plant to win federal approval.” Idaho began to look into CBD oil in its Expanded Access Program, with a study that started in 2015 including 40 children.

3) CA: LAPD Officer Busted for Alleged Fraudulent Work Comp Activity

Los Angeles Police Dept. Officer John Bailey was arrested recently for work comp fraud allegations, based on a claim filed earlier this year, according to a City News Service article in the LA Daily News. “…Investigators worked with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Healthcare Fraud Division and the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office in the case, in which Bailey is accused of knowingly committing workers’ compensation fraud and receiving benefits under false pretenses, according to the LAPD,” per the article. His bail was set at $60,000, according to police in the article.

4) WV: CMA Sues Medical Co., Alleging She Was Discriminated Against

Beckley resident and Certified Medical Assistant Carmen Gore has filed a lawsuit against Interactive Medical Specialist Inc., alleging wrongful termination, among other things, writes Lhalie Castillo of the West Virginia Record. “…Gore alleges she was terminated from her employment for complaining about the possibility of patients getting double injections or no injections due to her inability to log their injections because she lacked computer access,” according to the article. “…The plaintiff alleges Interactive Medical Specialist treated her differently due to her race (she is black), and retaliated against her and terminated her employment for complaining about violations of the Patient Safety Act.” Gore requests trial-by-jury, damages, court costs, and any other relief.

5) TX: Dough Machine Allegedly Causes Worker Injury at Baking Co.

Moises Moran of Houston has filed a lawsuit against Flowers Baking Co., alleging unsafe working conditions after his hand became stuck in a machine, writes John Suayan of the Southeast Texas Record. “…According to the lawsuit, Moran attempted to retrieve a piece of dough that became stuck in the machine’s spinning rollers when the incident in question occurred,” according to the article. Moran requests “unspecified monetary damages.”
