Brake Safety Week set for Sept. 15-21

Poorly maintained brake systems can reduce brake capacity and stopping distance. The CVSA’s Operation Airbrake Program is hosting Brake Safety Week beginning Sept. 15. During the week, inspectors throughout North America will check brake systems on large trucks and buses to identify out-of-adjustment brakes and brake system violations.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) 

NIOSH publishes chemical management strategy

In a recent technical report, NIOSH provides a plan for employers to categorize chemicals without occupational exposure limits (OELs). The strategy explains how to classify these chemicals into “bands” based on toxicity and known negative health effects, which allows necessary controls to be implemented accordingly.

3M recalls fall protection devices

3M Co. issued a recall and stop-use alert for two fall protection devices: The DBI-SALA Nano-Lok edge and Wrap Back Twin-Leg Self-Retracting Lifelines. The company states that these products should be removed from use immediately, as the energy absorber may not deploy properly. Users can return their unit and receive a repaired unit, replacement unit or elect to receive a refund.

Suicide is next major workplace safety risk

Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death across the U.S. and the second leading cause among 10 to 34-year-olds. Men in the construction and mining industries, and women in arts, design, entertainment, sports and media are at the highest risk according to statistics. Employers can recognize and address this risk using resources from the Suicide Prevention Resource Center, Centers for Disease Control and OSHA.
