A new mobile app from MSHA will help deliver safety and health information to members of the mining industry. Developed using stakeholder feedback, the app includes information on safety topics, health topics, miners’ rights and MSHA.

NIOSH seeks input on fatigue management project

NIOSH is seeking input on an information-collecting project that would focus on fatigue management in the oil and gas industry. The goals for the project include obtaining a better understanding of how fatigue affects employees, identifying applicable factors and assessing mitigation strategies. Comments are due by October 3.

Stop work authority (SWA) is meant to empower employees to stop unsafe situations, but employees may not always feel comfortable or confident. An Industrial Safety & Hygiene News article discusses two phenomena that could help explain an employee’s hesitation to stop work: The Diffusion of Responsibility and the Bystander Effect. The article also discusses ways to help employees feel more comfortable.
