Senate proposes increase to OSHA budget

The Senate is proposing an 11.1% funding increase for OSHA in the upcoming fiscal year. In addition to OSHA, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and Chemical Safety Board (CSB) would all see an increase. The Senate Appropriations Committee is expected to consider the bills after the fall recess.

FMCSA kicks off apprenticeship pilot program

A new apprenticeship pilot program will allow commercial truck drivers younger than 21 to operate interstate. Qualified motor carriers can apply online and up to 3,000 apprentices will be allotted. Participants will be required to complete at least 400 hours of on-duty time and 240 hours of driving time with an experienced driver.

Survey gives insight into beliefs on safety responsibilities

According to a survey of more than 900 people across the U.S., 95% of employees believe more can be done to make their workplaces safer. When asked about responsibility, 31% agreed that employees themselves should be accountable and over half said they had ideas on how to improve safety in their industry.
