NY State Bar Seeks Lawyers for Pro Bono COVID-19 Assistance Program

The NewYork State Bar Association in partnership with the New York State Court System, is seeking to lawyers for a pro bono COVID-19 assistance program to help New Yorkers who are struggling with the COVID-19 pandemic and are in need of legal assistance.

The program was announced today by NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo. He stated that New York State needs the help of attorneys to handle a surge in legal matters resulting from the coronavirus pandemic and ensuing economic fallout.

The State established a new partnership with the New York State Court System to create a pro bono network of volunteer lawyers to provide New Yorkers in need with free legal assistance. Volunteers will begin to receive training and start offering assistance next week. Lawyers interested in volunteering can sign up at www.nysba.org/covidvolunteer

While the initial program involves claims for unemployment insurance in the near future a Virtual Legal Advice Clinic will be established to answer questions from the public on civil legal issues on a limited scope basis.
