New York City, NY (CompNewsNetwork) - Martin A. Schwartzman was named First Deputy Superintendent of the Department in April 2010. As First Deputy, Schwartzman is the second in command of the Department, overseeing the functions handled by the Deputy Superintendents of the Department as well as the operations of the agency.
Schwartzman had served since February 2010 as Deputy Superintendent for Strategic Planning and Market Initiatives, with responsibility for ensuring that the Insurance Department was operating as efficiently and effectively as possible in meeting the needs of consumers and industry.
Prior to that, he was Assistant Deputy Superintendent and Chief of the Life Bureau, the Insurance Department Bureau responsible for supervising more than 500 life insurance companies, retirement systems, reinsurers, annuity funds and other entities. Before that assignment, he served as Director of Policy Initiatives, Assistant Chief Examiner of the Department's Property Bureau and Supervising Examiner with the Health Bureau. Schwartzman joined the department in 1980.
Schwartzman has participated in various National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) committees and assisted the Superintendent on the Life Insurance and Annuities (A) Committee. Schwartzman was project coordinator for the New York State Medical Malpractice Taskforce and supervised the rate and form filings units of the Property Bureau. He was a key participant in developing and supervising the implementation of a risk-based examination program for the Health Bureau.
A graduate of Hofstra University, Schwartzman has numerous professional designations and memberships. He is a Certified Financial Examiner (CFE), Certified Insurance Examiner (CIE) and Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU). He was an instructor in Hofstra's CPCU program for more than 10 years. He lives in Bayside, Queens, with his wife, Caryn, and their twins, Robby and Allyson.Read Also
