Robert L. Pratter Named Acting Insurance Commissioner

Harrisburg, PA (CompNewsNetwork) - Governor Edward G. Rendell has named Robert L. Pratter to serve as acting Insurance Commissioner for the Pennsylvania Insurance Department.

Pratter has served as the executive deputy general counsel for litigation with the state's Office of General Counsel since 2008.  During his extensive legal career, Pratter has specialized in regulatory, corporate and judicial proceedings affecting the insurance industry. He has also led complex commercial litigation and has extensive experience in regulatory matters before various commonwealth agencies.,

Prior to his public service, Pratter had been senior vice president and general counsel for PMA Capital Corporation.

A cum laude graduate of Yale University (B.A.) as well as the University of Pennsylvania Law School (J. D.), Pratter joined the Philadelphia law firm of Duane, Morris & Heckscher (now Duane Morris LLP) upon his Penn Law graduation.  He served as a partner in the firm for over 25 years, chair of the Administrative Law Group and a member of the Partner's Board and other substantive committees.

Pratter will succeed Joel Ario, who has served as commissioner since July 2007.

Ario is leaving to take on new health reform challenges at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. As of August 30, he will be the director of the Office of Insurance Exchanges of the Office of Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight. This new position will be responsible for the state-based, health insurance exchanges that every state will establish by 2014.
