MEMIC Scholarship for Families of Injured Workers Now Accepting Applications

Portland, ME (WorkersCompensation.com) - Workers’ compensation insurer MEMIC is accepting applications for its Harvey Picker Horizon Scholarship Program for children and spouses of workers who have been seriously injured on the job.
 
As one of the fastest growing workers’ compensation insurers on the Eastern Seaboard, MEMIC recognizes that although workers’ compensation insurance covers medical treatment and replaces a percentage of lost wages, it cannot eliminate entirely the stress and strain that an injury can cause a family. While MEMIC’s mission is to help workers avoid injuries in the first place, with this scholarship the company hopes to help families confronted by a significant injury to see a brighter future on the horizon. MEMIC has awarded $140,000 in scholarships since 2001.
 
“It’s made it a lot easier and not so worrisome,” says Griffin Wade, a 2016 scholarship recipient from Lewiston, Maine. “It's taken away a good majority of the financial burden. I was kind of left to pay for my own college. Without the scholarship I was thankfully given, I was going to have to take out a massive loan in my name and I want to come out of college with as little debt as I can.” Wade is in his first year at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island studying Culinary Nutrition.
 
"It was a huge relief,” says Sadie Martinez Clavijo, a 2016 Horizon Scholarship recipient from Hartford, Connecticut. “When I heard the news that I got it, I started crying right away. We’ve all felt the weight of the world on our shoulders the last five years because of our dad’s workplace injury.” She is graduating in May from the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Kentucky with a double major in Criminal Justice and Spanish.
 
“Sadie is a great example of the compassion and dedication for the community our scholarship winners have,” says MEMIC Senior Vice President of External Affairs Michael Bourque. “In the summer when she isn’t interning with the Connecticut State Police and going to crime scenes, she is teaching youth golf and life skills with The First Tee.”
 
MEMIC's Horizon Scholarship is named after former Camden resident Harvey Picker, a renowned physicist, educator, philanthropist and advocate for education. In 1992, Picker was appointed by then Governor John R. McKernan as a member of the Blue Ribbon Commission on Workers’ Compensation, which led to the formation of MEMIC. Picker also later served as a member of the Board of Directors at MEMIC.
 
Potential winners must complete the application and all requirements by April 28, 2016 to be considered for a scholarship of up to $5,000. Applicants will be judged on academic transcripts, citizenship and future promise. Students must be attending or planning to attend an accredited college or university. To be eligible, the related injured worker must have been working for a MEMIC policyholder at the time of injury.
