MedRisk’s Roger Nelson Receives APTA’s Highest Honor

King of Prussia, PA (WorkersCompensation.com) - The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) has conferred its prestigious Mary McMillan Lecture Award on   Roger Nelson, PT, PhD, FAPTA, vice president of MedRisk's Expert Clinical Benchmarks (ECB). Since 1996, Dr. Nelson has led ECB — MedRisk's research and academic arm. MedRisk is a leading managed care company specializing in the physical rehabilitation of injured workers.

The award is the highest honor bestowed upon an APTA member and recognizes a physical therapist who has made distinguished contributions to the profession. The recipient presents a lecture on a subject of his or her choice at the annual conference. Dr. Nelson is an internationally recognized physical medicine expert who has served the profession and APTA for nearly 50 years. He is a former physical therapy advisor to the U.S. Surgeon General and has held a number of academic and research positions with prominent organizations such as the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Division of Safety Research, where he developed and managed the Low Back Atlas Study; U.S. Food and Drug Administration; and U.S. Public Health Service.

Dr. Nelson has also held a variety of leadership roles within APTA, including Advisory Panel on Research chair, Guide to Physical Therapist Practice Task Force chair, and Board of Directors and House of Delegates member. He has also received a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to study low back pain in federal workers, has represented the PT profession on the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR) Low Back Guideline Panel, and has assisted the state of Florida in practice guidelines development.

An inspirational mentor and educator for the past three decades, Dr. Nelson spent seven years as a visiting professor at the University of Professional Education's Physiotherapy Program in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, and is an emeritus professor of Physical Therapy at Lebanon Valley College in Annville, Pa. Dr. Nelson has more than 50 publications in peer-reviewed journals, is the author or co-author of three physical medicine textbooks and has delivered more than 150 scientific presentations worldwide.

The 44th McMillian Lecture honoree, Dr. Nelson will deliver his general-session lecture at APTA's Annual Conference to be held June 26-29, 2013, in Salt Lake City, Utah.
