MedRisk’s Mike Ryan Heads Panel on Cutting Comp Cost Drivers

King of Prussia, PA (WorkersCompensation.com) ― MedRisk's Chief Growth Officer Mike Ryan will moderate a panel discussion on “Clamping Down on Work Comp Cost Drivers” at the Aug. 19-23 Workers' Compensation Educational Conference at the Orlando World Center Marriott. Joining Ryan are Joseph Paduda, principal of Health Strategy Associates in Madison, Conn. and Marc H. Salm, vice president of risk management for Publix Super Markets, Inc. of Lakeland, Fla. MedRisk is a leading managed care company specializing in the physical rehabilitation of injured workers.

The session focuses on two of the most often talked about cost drivers in workers' compensation ― physical medicine and pharmacy. Medical severity in workers' compensation outpaces medical inflation by three to one, according to the National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI). The council's Aug. 2011 Workers' Compensation Prescription Drug Study reports that pharmacy represents 19 percent of a claim's medical dollar, while studies from the Workers' Compensation Institute show that physical medicine holds the top spot at 20 to 30 percent of a claim's medical spend.

Ryan, Paduda and Salm will illustrate how overutilization occurs in workers' compensation and recommend proven strategies for controlling it, so claims professionals can better manage utilization and proactively identify early warning signs.

The CEU-accredited session will be presented from 2 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 21.
