Man Convicted For Prescription Fraud

Sacramento, CA (CompNewsNetwork) - Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner announced today that Trent Allen Sudbeck, 41, of Lake Forest, was convicted of multiple insurance fraud related crimes on May 11.  Sudbeck was found guilty of providing false statements in support of an insurance claim, prescription forgery, commercial burglary and grand theft.  He was sentenced to 45 days in jail, three years formal probation and ordered to pay restitution.

"When insurance fraud perpetrators attempt to cheat the system, they drive up the cost of insurance for everyone," said Commissioner Poizner.  "CDI enforcement officers will not stand idly by as scam artists seek to take advantage of insurance companies and increase costs for consumers. If you commit insurance fraud, you will pay."

In November 1996, Sudbeck was involved in an automobile collision while performing duties for his employer. As a result of the collision, he suffered a lower back injury, which was covered under his employer's workers compensation policy.  In April and in June 2006, Sudbeck presented forged prescriptions for Oxycontin to a pharmacy in Mission Viejo. On those two occasions, he obtained 240 tablets of Oxycontin from the pharmacy, valued at $1416.

Upon discovery of the forged prescription, the workers compensation insurance company referred the case to the Department of Insurance.  CDI launched an investigation into Sudbeck's illegal activity, which ultimately led to his conviction.

This case was prosecuted by the Orange County District Attorney's Office.

Commissioner Poizner oversees sixteen CDI Enforcement Branch regional offices throughout the state.  Close to 1900 insurance fraud-related arrests have been made by the Department of Insurance's Enforcement Branch since Commissioner Poizner took office in 2007 - more arrests than have been made during any other two year period, under any previous insurance commissioner.
