"I want to congratulate each of the organizations receiving funding for helping us do the important job of keeping workers safe," said Governor Patrick. "We are more committed than ever to equipping people with the skills they need to stay safe on the job."
"By promoting safe and healthy conditions in the workplace, these grants will ensure that job safety remains a primary goal in the Commonwealth," said Lieutenant Governor Timothy Murray.
Each fiscal year, the Department of Industrial Accidents (DIA) through the Office of Safety, awards safety training grants to various organizations for workplace training. Over 11,000 workers in Massachusetts will receive training this year in statewide programs ranging from safe lead paint removal to lifeguard training.
For example, the IBEW Local 223 in Lakeville will be trained in the safe installation of rooftop solar panels while the Worcester JATC will teach safe electrical installation, CPR and First Aid techniques to new apprentices and journeymen. New Bedford Public Schools will train staff members in de-escalation techniques and safe self-restraint while Children's Hospital in Boston will provide staff with comprehensive training concerning the safe handling of hazardous drugs and medical waste.
"Massachusetts workers have a right to work in a safe environment," said Secretary of Labor and Workforce Development Joanne F. Goldstein. "These safety grants will have a positive and long-term impact on the program participants and employers."
