It is with great sadness that the law firm of Swift, Currie, McGhee & Hiers announces the passing of James B. Hiers, Jr, the last surviving founding member of the firm now in its 60th year.
Jim was a renowned leader across the profession. He was past president and past chairman of the Board of the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel, as well as a past president of the Southeastern Claim Executives Association (now known as the Atlantic Claim Executives Association).
Jim is the former vice chairman of Insurance Research and Trial Lawyers Association’s Law Institute, and he was elected to the American Board of Trial Advocates. He was active with the International Association of Defense Counsel, and he served as vice chairman of the Products Liability Committee of the American Bar Association's TIPS Section and as senior vice chairman of the Workers' Compensation Committee.
In 1981, he co-authored Georgia Workers’ Compensation Law and Practice, which has been updated annually since for members of the bench and bar. Jim was one of 22 life members of the Atlanta Claims Association and for over 25 years conducted the installation of officers at the association’s annual conference.
Jim was the model of civility and professionalism in all aspects of his career – positively impacting many generations of lawyers in trying cases, speaking, authoring articles and books, participating in and leading organizations, and answering the call as a resourceful, experienced mediator.
