Governor Granholm Allocates $2 Million For No Worker Left Behind Initiative

Lansing, MI (CompNewsNetwork) - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm and the Michigan Department of Labor & Economic Growth (DLEG) today awarded $2,000,000 of state General Fund/General Purpose (GF/GP) funding to the 25 Michigan Works! Agencies (MWAs) to support the governor's No Worker Left Behind (NWLB) initiative.

"This funding will help citizens upgrade their skills for new good-paying jobs that demand more specialized skills and knowledge," Granholm said.  "A highly skilled workforce is key to retaining and attracting employers who want to grow their business in Michigan."

"Our aggressive economic strategy is bringing companies and thousands of jobs in industries that are demanding highly skilled, educated workers," said Granholm.  "This funding will help keep pace by enrolling thousands more Michigan residents into the training they need to get and succeed in good-paying jobs."

Governor Granholm announced the No Worker Left Behind initiative on August 1, 2007; an ambitious plan to train 100,000 Michigan citizens in three years for jobs in high demand occupations, emerging industries, or entrepreneurial endeavors.  NWLB gives Michigan residents the opportunity to acquire the skills they need to win good-paying jobs in today's global economy.  No Worker Left Behind provides up to two years of free tuition at any Michigan community college, university, or other approved training program, for qualifying participants.

Funding for No Worker Left Behind is provided by the State of Michigan (Public Act 251 of 2008) and the U.S. Department of Labor.  A table is attached that provides the specific funding allocations for each MWA.  To view an interactive map of the state's 25 Michigan Works! Agencies and the counties included in each, go to www.michiganworks.org.

DLEG is investing in Michigan's future by helping to create the jobs of today and tomorrow, ensuring that our children and adults have the skills these jobs demand, making Michigan a better place to do business, and training and placing those who need jobs now.
