Employers Across Michigan "Take a Stand" for Workplace Safety and Health

Lansing, MI (WorkersCompensation.com) - It was another successful “Take a Stand Day” for workplace safety and health with 137 companies around the state recently partnering with the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA). The MIOSHA program is part of the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA). 

“Take a Stand Day demonstrates a strong commitment to protecting Michigan’s working men and women through voluntary cooperation between employers and MIOSHA,” said MIOSHA Director Bart Pickelman. “This year’s high number of both new and returning participants is a reflection of employers’ keeping the workplace safe for their most valuable asset, their employees.”

For the 14^th consecutive year, MIOSHA dedicated nearly all of its safety and health professionals to visit Michigan worksites to provide one-on-one consultations and address hazards as requested by employers. The visits were citation and penalty-free with the understanding that employers must correct serious conditions to protect employees from any serious hazards. Since the first TASD in 2004, more than 2,600 employers have participated to address safety and health hazards at their worksite.    

Companies worked cooperatively with MIOSHA staff to recognize hazardous conditions and effectively address safety and health issues, including:

• The application of MIOSHA rules,
• Conducting safety and health hazard surveys,
• Evaluating the effectiveness of safety and health systems, and
• Providing other requested technical assistance.

Shape Corp in Grand Haven participated in TASD again this year, its eighth since 2007.  “MIOSHA inspectors have a wealth of knowledge due to the experience of seeing and hearing about many situations that cause injuries,” said Shape Corp Safety and Environmental Coordinator Scott Morse. “It’s easy to become immune to hazards within your plant so it’s great to have someone from outside of the company come through and give their impressions and concerns. Taking part in this event can only help your company from a safety standpoint. There is no risk, only gains.”
Next year’s “Take a Stand” Day will take place on August 7, 2019. Employers are encouraged to “save the date” and get their request in early for a consultative visit by MIOSHA staff to address safety and health hazards at their worksite.
