Carpenter Arrested For WC Fraud In Utica

Utica, NY (CompNewsNetwork) - A Herkimer County man was arrested Tuesday for collecting $10,200 in workers' compensation benefits while working as a carpenter, the New York State Insurance Department reported.

Frederick J. Heinig, of Mary Street, Frankfort, was arrested after surveillance by investigators revealed him working during the same time period that he was receiving wage replacement benefits. He received the benefits between January and July 2008 after submitting various documents stating that he was unable to work because of a job-related injury.

Heinig was arrested by Utica police. He was charged with insurance fraud, perjury, falsifying business records and violating the state Workers' Compensation Law. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to four years in prison. A hearing will be conducted in Oneida County Court.

The investigation was conducted by Thomas F. Hurley Jr. of the Insurance Department's Frauds Bureau, the Office of the Fraud Inspector General of the New York State Workers' Compensation Broad and the New York State Insurance Fund.
