CA DWC Participates In 2011 Young Worker Leadership Academy

Oakland, CA (CompNewsNetwork) - The Division of Workers' Compensation (DWC) is participating in the annual Young Worker Leadership Academy being held Feb. 3, 4 and 5, 2011 in Berkeley. The academy provides a leadership development opportunity for teams of high school students, with adult sponsors, from different communities statewide to focus on young worker health and safety. The goals of the academy are to:
  • Teach youth about workplace health and safety and help them promote health and safety in the workplace to prevent workplace injuries
  • Provide participating youth an opportunity to develop specific action plans to promote young worker health and safety in their own communities, especially during Safe Jobs for Youth Month in May each year, as well as participate as alumni and youth mentors in future academies and in developing a statewide network of young health and safety promoters.

DWC Information and Assistance Officer, Andrea Lovette will represent DWC at the academy. The event takes place:

Saturday, Feb. 5
9 a.m. –  4 p.m.
University of California, Berkeley
University Hall on Oxford and University Ave.
Berkeley, CA

Participation in the Young Worker Leadership Academy represents another vital step in the DWC's plan to reach out to workers in ways that are meaningful to them, providing information about their rights should they become hurt or sick because of work.

The Young Worker Leadership Academy has been jointly developed by the University of California, Berkeley's Labor Occupational Health Program (LOHP) and the University of California, Los Angeles' Labor Occupational Safety and Health (LOSH) Program. The academy is part of the statewide Worker Occupational Safety and Health Training and Education Program (WOSHTEP) administered by the Commission on Health and Safety and Workers' Compensation within the Department of Industrial Relations. The academy receives additional funding from the California Wellness Foundation.
