CA DIR Partners With Agencies To Reach Spanish-Speaking Workers During Labor Rights Week

Oakland, CA (CompNewsNetwork) - The California Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) and the Division of Workers' Compensation (DWC), in association with the Mexican Foreign Ministry and the United States Department of Labor, are reaching out to workers across the state during “Labor Rights Week 2010.”

The nationwide initiative revolves around Labor Day and is the result of an on-going collaboration between local Mexican Consulate offices, federal and state labor and workforce departments, labor rights advocates and others. Consulate offices in seven California cities—Sacramento, San Francisco, San Jose, Fresno, Los Angeles, San Bernardino and San Diego—will host informative presentations Aug. 30 through Sept. 6, 2010.

“We share in the belief that every worker in California should know they are protected by state laws governing the right to be paid correctly, be safe at work and receive benefits if they are hurt on the job,” said DWC acting Administrative Director Carrie Nevans. “We're joining forces to educate and inform workers about their rights and about who to contact if those rights are violated.”

During the seminars constituents will receive general information in Spanish on medical treatment, disability payments, returning to work after an injury and resolving a disagreement over a workers' comp claim. Additionally, they will be provided with information about wage requirements and the state's heat illness prevention program. The events will take place:

Workers can find a listing of scheduled seminar days, times and locations in English and Spanish on DWC's Web site at
www.dwc.ca.gov. In the left navigation pane, click on “know my rights” under the “I want to” section. Spanish-speaking workers can scroll down the main navigation pane to the “En español” link above the “What's new” section.
