Kids’ Chance Scholarship Recipient Comes Full Circle

Working in the Workers' Compensation Industry that Helped her Family Overcome Tragedy

When Brianna Flynn was 7 years old, her life changed forever. Her father, a Los Angeles County deputy sheriff, was killed in the line of duty during a hostage situation.

“It was the most vivid day of my childhood, and unfortunately it’s been my Mom and I ever since,” Flynn recalled. “She basically had to raise four girls all on her own. She is one of the strongest people that I know.”

The loss was profound, but so, too, was the resilience that carried her family forward. Years later, while searching for ways to pursue her dream of higher education despite financial challenges, Flynn discovered Kids’ Chance, a nonprofit that provides scholarships and support to the children of workers who are critically or fatally injured on the job.

Kids’ Chance provided more than money—they gave her encouragement during some of her most formative years.

“(Kids’ Chance) helped me pay for my books for college, and even just emotionally,” Flynn said. “They saw me through my sophomore, junior and senior years, and were there for me. I couldn’t be more grateful for those people.”

A full-circle moment at Paradigm

After earning her nursing degree, Flynn began applying for jobs. One company stood out: Paradigm, a specialty care management organization focused on improving the lives of people with complex injuries and diagnoses—and the largest corporate supporter of Kids’ Chance. Today, Flynn serves as a field nurse case manager for Paradigm, where she recently had the chance to share Kids’ Chance with an injured worker who was worried about affording college for his son.

“I feel like it was kind of a full-circle moment for me,” Flynn said. “Kids’ Chance helped me in my time of need, and now I can spread that information to my injured workers.”

Kevin Turner, chief growth officer at Paradigm, said Flynn’s story embodies the mission behind the company’s long-standing support for Kids’ Chance.

“Brianna personifies why we invest in Kids’ Chance,” Turner said. “Kids’ Chance was there for Brianna to help support her dreams, and now she is supporting injured workers with compassion and professionalism through Paradigm, while raising awareness of the very program that helped her.”

Chris Letsos, chief executive officer of Kids’ Chance of America, echoed that sentiment:

“Brianna’s story shows how Kids’ Chance scholarship recipients are not only building brighter futures for themselves but also are eager to ‘pay it forward’ by helping others. When we give

kids a chance, we create a ripple effect of strength, compassion and support that strengthens families and the workers’ compensation community alike.”
