Hartford, CT (CompNewsNetwork) - A former Connecticut Supervisory Assistant State's Attorney in Milford was convicted of larceny and forgery today for stealing funds at the court where he worked and from the state employee union of which he served as Treasurer.
L. Mark Hurley, age 48, a resident of Trumbull, pled no contest in the Superior Court for the Judicial District of Middlesex to two counts of Larceny in the First Degree and one count of Forgery in the Second Degree. The Honorable Judge Patrick J. Clifford entered findings of guilty on all three counts.
Mr. Hurley will be sentenced on September 17, 2008, when Tolland State's Attorney Matthew C. Gedansky is recommending a term of ten years incarceration, execution suspended after three years served, and five years of probation. The defense will have the right to argue for a lesser sentence pursuant to a plea agreement accepted today by Judge Clifford.
The case was investigated by the Connecticut State Police Central District Major Crime Squad in conjunction with the Office of the State's Attorney for the Judicial District of Tolland. When the arrest was made in April of this year, the cases were heard in the Middlesex Judicial District to avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest.
Mr. Hurley resigned as Supervisory Assistant State's Attorney at the Superior Court, Geographical Area No. 22, Milford, on March 15, 2007.
He was arrested on April 16, 2008, in connection with the theft of funds related to his work as a prosecutor when he kept money meant for restitution for crime victims in the amount of $1,325.00.
Mr. Hurley also kept money that was to be forwarded to charity as part of the resolution of cases in the Milford courthouse in the amount of $55,367.00. Additionally, Mr. Hurley embezzled $28,900.00 from the Connecticut Association of Prosecutors, an employee union of which he served as Treasurer, the investigation found.
