Course Objectives:
  • The claims professional will understand some of the methods prosthetists use to objectively quantify functional potential of an injured worker with an amputation. This will allow them to know what questions to ask of the providers to make sure the medical justification is sufficient to support the recommended device.
  • The claims professional will be able to identify the differences between various prostheses and how the different characteristics help amputees reach their functional potential. They will understand the contraindications of some designs to help guide them in making the decision of what may or may not be appropriate.
  • The claims professional will understand the importance of the socket design and fit in decreasing the rate of rejection for a prosthesis. They will understand the necessity of the proper fit in order to maintain control, stability and function in the prosthesis.
  • The claims professional will recognize the impact of physical therapy and occupational therapy on the overall success of the patient with the prosthesis. They will be able to recognize when additional training is necessary vs. when a replacement prosthesis is required.
