Innovations in Pain and Opioid Management, Treatment, and Recovery

Many states are now passing legislation to address the opioid crisis. Good start, but we need to do more. The crisis is really three crises rolled into one: (1) Getting the already addicted off the drugs; (2) Addressing the new pain patients at risk of becoming addicted; and (3) Solving the chronic pain puzzle which is the big driver of the opioid addiction crisis. In this session, we will first review the epidemiology of the crisis with a focus on the impact to employers. We then will discuss pain as a biopsychosocial phenomenon providing both adjusters and case managers with a deeper appreciation of the available interventions that will help injured workers recover function and experience pain reduction more quickly. Lastly we’ll focus on how to become champions for those under our care who are struggling with opioid dependence and ultimately mitigate the risk of death and adverse outcomes.

Presenter: Dr. Nikki Wilson, Pharm.D., MBA, Coventry’s Director of Pharmacy Product Development
