Course Description:
The goal of this presentation is to discuss the ethical issues faced by all of the “stakeholders” in the workers’ compensation arena. This necessarily includes doctors, lawyers, claims adjusters, medical case managers, risk managers, employers, and even judges. Although the presentation is designed to cover the ethical issues faced by each stakeholder, the ultimate benefit to attendees is that they will understand how integrated they are within a system where we all face ethical issues – often daily – and how to spot problems while understanding how to make the right choice, even when it’s a difficult choice.
There are far reaching implications when ethical dilemmas present themselves. Starting with a basic overview of what ethics is and moving into the psychology of different ethical approaches, attendees should come to understand that often, ethical dilemmas may challenge their own sense of what is “the right thing to do.” Attendees will hopefully leave the presentation with the understanding that fact specific situations require careful and thoughtful consideration that sometimes challenges a workers’ compensation stakeholder’s core beliefs. The presentation covers matters that directly relate to claims adjusters and medical case managers, even when the hypothetical scenarios involve doctors, lawyers, claimants, employers, and HR representatives.
