Zurich Congratulates Winners Of Railroad 2013 Safety Awards

Schaumburg, IL (WorkersCompensation.com) - Zurich Insurance today congratulated 323 railroad companies who have been awarded 2013 Safety Awards by the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA). ASLRRA Safety Awards in various categories are given annually to recognize those railroads that have outstanding safety records and safety programs. Zurich is a 2014 Titanium level sponsor of the Safety Awards Program.

“Zurich is committed to helping its railroad clients mitigate risk and aggressively identify factors that can lead to workplace accidents,” said Ron Mathewson, Assistant Vice President of Railroad Specialty Products for Zurich North America. “And that is why these awards are so special to us at Zurich. Each winner exemplifies the importance of safety in the workplace, protecting people first, but also the bottom line of a business.”

The annual ASLRRA Safety Awards fall into three categories. The Jake Awards with Distinction and Jake Awards are based on railroad miles, hours, incidents, fatalities, injuries, and lost workdays reported to the Federal Railroad Association (FRA); and the President's Awards, which include the Safety Person of the Year Award and the Safety Professional of the Year Award, each presented to an employee of a member railroad who is judged to have advanced safety efforts on the job and in the community. A panel made up of representatives from railroads, labor, shippers and suppliers selected award winners from a field of entries submitted by ASLRRA member railroads.

ASLRRA President Richard F. Timmons commented, “The ASLRRA has concentrated on safety over the past decade and this dedication has paid off as evidenced by FRA safety statistics. Nothing is more important to the short line rail industry than safety. In 2007, Zurich stepped up and acquired the 2006 Jake Award pin program, procuring and distributing the pins to all of the Jake Award winning railroads.  Zurich's seven years of commitment is deeply appreciated.”

Among those recognized and congratulated are:

  • Safety Professional of the Year – Tom Leopold, Anacostia Rail Holdings
  • Safety Person of the Year – Ozzie España, Pacific Harbor Line
  • Most Improved Award – Northern Plains Railroad, Inc.

A total list of award winners is attached.
