WA Heroes to be honored at 62nd Governor's Safety and Health Conference

Tumwater, WA (WorkersCompensation.com) - When train conductor Max Chabo saw a man on the tracks in front of the moving train in an Olympia tunnel, he threw the emergency brake, jumped off the engine and raced ahead of the train to pull the man away from the engine, saving him from going under the train. Chabo is one of the men and women who took heroic action to provide critical aid when it was needed the most. Next week, they will all be honored for their life-saving efforts.

In all, 40 men and women will receive the Governor's Lifesaving Award and will be featured guests at the 62nd Governor's Industrial Safety and Health Conference onSept. 25 and 26 at the Tacoma Convention Center.

The conference, sponsored by the Governor's Industrial Safety and Health Advisory Board and the Department of Labor & Industries (L&I), includes safety demonstrations, workshops, and special events such as the 16th Annual Forklift Rodeo and the 40th Annual Poletop Rescue Competition.

The Lifesaving Awards are presented on the first day of the conference during the opening ceremony. Recipients are selected by an independent committee of the conference advisory board comprised of business and labor representatives. The awards will be presented by Meeghan Black, host of KING 5's Evening Magazine.

This year, those receiving the honor include several 24-Hour Fitness Bellevue employees who used their CPR/AED training twice within a 24-hour period to help save stricken gym members; two King County Metro transit employees who went into a badly wrecked upside down car to get the victim out; and a number of others around the state who used their CPR/AED training to assist others in life threatening situations.
