TX DWC Observes Texas Occupational Safety and Health Month

Austin, TX (WorkersCompensation.com) - Texas Governor Greg Abbott has proclaimed May as Texas Occupational Safety and Health Month.  The Division of Workers' Compensation (DWC) provides occupational safety resources and training to increase safety awareness for employers and employees statewide.  According to data recently finalized by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 508 employees died from work-related injuries in Texas in 2013.

“The number of fatal occupational injuries in Texas is a reminder of the importance of safety programs, training, and awareness in all workplaces,” said Commissioner of Workers' Compensation Ryan Brannan.  “One of my top priorities is to leverage the workplace safety resources within DWC to help reduce the number of fatal occupational injuries.”

The DWC will host its 19th Annual Workplace Safety and Health Conference, the Texas Safety Summit, on May 19-21 as part of its observation of Texas Occupational Safety and Health Month.  This conference features top safety professionals providing valuable information on safety trends and education that can help employers reduce workplace injuries and associated costs.  Conference information can be found on the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) website at http://www.tdi.texas.gov/wc/safety/summithome.html.

Additionally, the DWC offers a variety of safety and health resources for Texas employers at no cost that are available year-round, regardless of workers' compensation subscription status, including:

  • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) compliance assistance for small, private sector employers through the Occupational Safety and Health Consultation (OSHCON) program
  • Safety and health publications online
  • Safety and health training DVD loan library
  • Monthly Safety and Health Update newsletter, which provides safety tips, upcoming training events and safety observances, OSHA updates, and      more

The DWC also offers low-cost resources such as training seminar and customized onsite training.
