Houston Medical Facility Convicted of Workers’ Compensation Fraud

Austin, TX (WorkersCompensation.com) - A Houston medical facility pled guilty in a Travis County District Court to workers’ compensation fraud and was ordered to pay $30,000 in restitution.

EME International, owned by Christine Caldwell of Marblehead, MA was convicted of a 3rd degree felony. Her facility billed Texas Mutual Insurance for two to four-hour Functional Capacity Evaluation exams that did not take two to four hours to perform. The fraudulent billing happened between April 28, 2014, to March 17, 2016.

The Division of Workers’ Compensation’s (DWC) prosecution unit obtained the indictment against the company.

“Activities like this reflect a complete lack of patient care,” says DWC’s Deputy Commissioner of Compliance and Investigations, Debra Knight. “Not only that, but fraudulent billing within the health care system drives up the costs of health care for everyone in the State of Texas.”

Members of DWC’s prosecution unit are embedded in the Travis County District Attorney’s Office and are paid by DWC to fight fraud across Texas.
