Elk Grove Village, IL (WorkersCompensation.com) - On May 1, Stephen A. Frangos, MD, MPH, FACOEM, of Houston, Texas, an internationally renowned preventive medicine specialist with expertise in the petrochemical industry and global infectious diseases, was installed as president of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM), the nation's largest medical society dedicated to promoting the health of workers through preventive medicine, clinical care, research, and education. The installation ceremony took place at the 104th annual membership meeting held during the College's 2019 American Occupational Health Conference (AOHC) in Anaheim, Calif.
Dr. Frangos is Regional Medical Manager for North and South America at Chevron Corporation in Houston. He is Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler, Assistant Clinical Faculty Member at the University of Utah, and Adjunct Professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. He also serves on the Advisory Board for the NIOSH Educational Resource Center at the Southwest Center for Occupational and Environmental Health in Houston.
Dr. Frangos received his Bachelor of Science Degree from the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., and served with the U.S. Air Force from 1979 to 1989. He received his Medical Degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md., and his Master of Public Health Degree (MPH) from the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. Dr. Frangos is a Diplomate of the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) certified in occupational medicine.
A member of ACOEM since 1989, Dr. Frangos was elevated to Fellowship in 2000. Prior to becoming President, Dr. Frangos served as ACOEM President-Elect, Vice President, and member of the Board of Directors. He is a member of the Western Occupational and Environmental Medicine Association (WOEMA) and the Texas College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (TxCOEM), two of ACOEM's component societies, and served in positions of leadership in both components. In WOEMA, he served on the Board of Directors; in TXCOEM he served the component as President, President-Elect, and Secretary/Treasurer.
Founded in 1916, ACOEM is the pre-eminent physician-led organization that champions the health of workers, safety of workplaces, and quality of environments. This dynamic group of more than 4,000 occupational medicine physicians and associated health professionals is united via the College to develop positions and policies on vital issues relevant to the practice of preventive medicine within workplace, family and community settings. The College is headquartered in Elk Grove Village, Ill., a northwest suburb of Chicago.
