It seems hard to believe that we are already approaching our fourth Hot Seat Webinar. As many of you know, the Hot Seat was the brainchild of Florida Deputy Chief Judge David Langham and WorkersCompensation.com, and was designed to take on important topics for the workers' comp industry with frank and open discussion. Our next episode will be June 29, 2018 at 1:00PM EST and is titled “Rise of The Millennials: The Passing of the Baton.”
We chose this topic because we are currently in the midst of a shift in generational size and influence in the workplace. According to Pew Research, as of 2016 the Millennial generation became the largest workplace demographic in the US. With 10,000 Baby Boomers retiring every day, their percentages as a whole are going nowhere but up. As they ascend into areas of leadership, the way things are viewed and how things get done are likely to change.
One thing is certain. We are going to need a lot of participation ribbons.
Our guests for this episode are Alfred Faber, Director and Division Head of the Workers Compensation Solutions (WCS) division of Insurance Services Office, Inc. (ISO) and our own Dara Barney, Senior Editor of Premium Media at WorkersCompensation.com. Faber is a Gen X'r who was recognized last year by the IAIABC with a NextGen Award for industry leaders under 40. He has a great deal of experience in hiring and managing Millennials. Barney is a Millennial, having spent her entire life in that generation (that was a lighthearted joke, if you didn't catch it).
One of my personal goals for this presentation is to address some of the misperceptions that exist regarding Millennials. The mythical dependence on ribbons and supposed lack of loyalty are two such areas that will be important to cover. Another point will be to actually define who Millennials are; they are often cited in stories related to attitudes and issues in today's college students, when the reality is that Millennials are now generally beyond college age. The kids in college today, sometimes referred to as Snowflakes by bombastic bloggers such as myself, are actually Generation Z. They are the group that Millennials will no doubt be highly critical of in 10 or 20 years.
Please join us for what will be an interesting look at the workplace of the future. You may register for the free webinar here. All who attend will be issued a digital Certificate of Participation immediately after the webinar ends. It will also be available for viewing after the fact, but no participation ribbons will be given for recorded viewing.
After all, we have to draw the line somewhere.
