Texas Mutual CEO Rich Gergasko Rich joined 10 Austin-area executives in the American Heart Association's MoveMore ATX CEO Challenge competition to see who added the most movement to their daily routines April 11-13.
In last year's National Walking Day competition, Rich placed second with 61,000 steps, which is about 27 miles. This year, the challenge spanned three full days and competitors were tracked on overall activity, meaning more rigorous tasks yielded more points. Check in the leaderboard for recent rankings.
We encourage you to participate in Move More Month. Find tips below on how you can make your workplace more walkable and active:
Take stretching or walking breaks. Encourage employees to give their muscles the attention they need, especially if they are working in physically demanding jobs. Stretching reduces stress and helps break up the day so that employees are more productive, and walking is a good way for office workers to stay active throughout the day.
Opt for the stairs. Add posters in stairways that commend your employees for taking the extra steps, and posters in elevators that encourage them to choose the stairs next time.
Move more. Try leading group stretch breaks or conducting walking meetings.
Team effort. Consider finding a group 5K or walking challenge to give your employees a common goal to work toward.
Park farther. Don't pick the front row parking spot; choose one farther back to get extra steps.
Show us how you are celebrating your participation in #MoveMoreATX by tagging @ahaaustin and @texasmutual on social media.
As of April 13, Rich was in third at 3,456 “met minutes.”
