California / OSHA Awards STAR Flags To Pratt Whitney Rocketdyne And Hamilton Sundstrand Space, Land And Sea Rocketdyne For Their Exemplary Workplace Safety Programs

  • 02/04/08

Canoga Park, CA (CompNewsNetwork) - The California Department of Industrial Relations’ Division of Occupational Safety & Health (DIR/DOSH) is awarding coveted Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) STAR Flags to Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne (PWR) and Hamilton Sundstrand Space, Land & Sea Rocketdyne (SLSR) in ceremonies in Canoga Park.

"The commitment to safety programs at Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne and Hamilton Sundstrand Rocketdyne are as impressive as we have seen anywhere in the state," said DIR Director John Duncan. "The thoroughness, creativity and dedication involved are great examples of the kind of respect we should all have in the workplace and makes them very deserving of these awards."

The California Voluntary Protection Program STAR is designed to recognize employers and their employees who have implemented safety and health programs that effectively prevent and control occupational hazards. These programs go beyond minimal Cal/OSHA standards and provide the best feasible protection at the site. Cal/VPP STAR establishments are considered to be leaders in the field of workplace safety and health. There are currently 59 VPP sites in California flying STAR flags.

"We are proud to be recognized in the state as a leader in occupational safety and health, but we are most proud of the fact that we are maintaining the safest and healthiest work environment possible for our employees and our surrounding communities," said PWR California Operations General Manager Steve Bouley. "That is our highest priority."

Candidates for the Cal/VPP STAR program are required to complete a rigorous health and safety process. There are five key elements required to achieve induction into the program including management commitment, worksite analysis, hazard prevention and control, health and safety training, and continual improvement. Applicants must submit documents to support the implementation of the five Cal/VPP elements along with the last three years average Injury & Illness Rates and Loss Work Day Incident rates.

DIR/DOSH protects workers and the public from safety hazards through its Cal/OSHA, elevator, amusement ride, aerial tramway, ski lift and pressure vessel programs, and provides consultative assistance to employers. For more information about the Voluntary Protection Program and other topics, visit the Cal/OSHA web site at http://www.cal-osha.ca.gov.
