Will CA SDI look at the period of time to determine amount and eligibility prior to me becoming injured if they normally only look back at the last 18 months? I applied but they said I still had work comp benefits available so I could not get CASDI. The amount they said that I would get was a few 100 per week which is based on me working less than half time. if they look at the periods before my work injury the amount I would get would be just over a 1K per week but they would need to go back prior to my injury.

technically that's not true.
when liability periods overlap between SDI and comp, SDI can pay under lien (they file their bill with the comp court to make a decision as to which should pay)
I believe the period on which they base their payments is fixed and doesn't change when there are intervening periods of unemployment or disability, but you should review the SDI rules here
http://www.edd.ca.gov/disability/SDI_Online.htm or contact your atty. you can appeal their denial.
if your comp claim is litigated, ask SDI to pay under lien- that way they can get reimbursed out of your benefits if the court says comp should pay.

I'm in San diego, I had state disability before wc, but when wc picked up case, wc payed part of wages and state disability payed part til my 52 weeks ended. Then wc took over.so I do know that I can collect from both at same time but I don't know how they work out the amount. And I did file for state first.
