Spamming on the forum
#1
I just wanted to thank everyone who has been helping us by reporting SPAM when they see it. The problem has grown increasingly difficult, and we are working to keep these idiotic and useless posts off the board.

Much of the fight goes on behind the scenes, but I wanted to share this with you. When we identify networks being used to produce spam on the board, we have the ability to block their IP addresses (the underlying numeric number that is assigned to their network). Much of the spam we see comes from overseas, and when we get those we generally ban the entire IP range, if it is assigned completely to foreign countries. We can do this because it does not really matter if those outside the USA can access this board. To give you an idea of the magnitude of what we are dealing with, I have listed many of the IP addresses we have banned, as well as the last time someone tried to access the site through them. Every "Today" you see means at least one person has tried to gain access today, most likely for spamming purposes. This does not reflect the multiple attempts we see. One of them (222.*.*.*) was just put in the system today, at 11:01 AM. You can see it blocked an attempt just 2 minutes later.

Thought this might help you understand the importance of targeting these guys early. We appreciate your continued help!

i noticed that potential spammers input a date of birth usually within days of the date they register. this is not true in every case. but it appears that they have a massive registration session and then they do batch posting.
obviously there is some type of bot and script used in their process.
many very suspicious names on the member list......

you need a bot as well -- a counterstrike bot--something the identifies the behavior pattern and flags it as suspicious and requires additional verification.

but then you have us......
which is even better..
maybe.

Clearly. And we are currently under a bit of an assault. Two of us have been "banning and deleting" for the last couple hours. We've taken dozens out today.

they are spamming the registration process/user IDs.
almost a DDoS attack.
sounds like it's not about advertising but revenge/harassment/retribution or just a competition to show they can beat you. sounds almost personal by someone.

admin better gear up for another spam attack.
Nonsense names & the birthdays give it away --most are only a few days out....

Yep, they are there, but hopefully we are on it. We have temporarily changed the sign up process to require our approval before new users can post. We can review these new users against a database of known spammers and weed out most of them. We've been doing this the last couple days, and it is helping.

We are working on an automated method to check these databases that will deny spammers access automatically. That is a few days off, but we can then let new users register via email verification as in the past. Thanks for your vigilance!
