Hello - I recently went 'in business' for myself after being laid off from Corporate America. I have been painting independently for the past 9 months, but most recently was hired by a General Contractor that I knew through town.
The GC is now asking me for proof of WC before he will pay me my final invoices. I was told that in the state of Massachusetts, that it's not required (I work for myself, by myself). If this is the case, why would teh GC's auditors require it?
Also, since he has already paid me for the past 3 months, am I on the hook for the 'fees' that he is claiming he would owe for not having WC during that time period?
Finally - I have heard that I can get WC for my business (which is just my name and my SSN!) but exempt myself, and get a refund at the end of the year. Is this true? If so, would my WC coverage in this case still satisfy the auditors?
Thanks so much!
