| The concept
is simple: Kids of workers killed or severely injured
on the job deserve a chance for a better life. They
may be in significant need of help, or they may want
to go to college.
Enter Kids’ Chance of
America, an organization committed to helping establish
programs in every state to accomplish this admirable
goal. With humble beginnings as Kids’ Chance, Inc.,
based in Valdosta, GA, it has grown to a network of
organizations across 27 states. The original Kids’ Chance
of Georgia has raised $3 million since 1988, and has
awarded 433 scholarships. Nationwide, this network has
awarded over 700 scholarships.
Doug McCoy, a Director
for Kids’ Chance, is proud of this organization, but
wants to see more done. “There are still 23 states that
lack such a program, including California”, according
to McCoy. “If we could get California set up, that would
represent a huge portion of the uncovered population”.
McCoy says that Kids’ Chance can assist interested parties
in establishing their own state programs, but is not
active in the management of the state organizations.
Workers’ Comp, being independent and different in every
state, dictates a need for a similarly structured College
Tuition Fund program.
WorkersCompensation.com
learned of this organization at the recent RIMS Conference
in Philadelphia, and believes that this cause is a perfect
one to support. Sandy Blowers, VP of Sales and Marketing
says “This is our industry, and Kids’ Chance represents
an excellent way to give back to the community that
supports us. This cause has the unique ability to unify
all sides of the industry across a common goal.”
