New Puppy
Today my daughter got a new puppy. She is a 7 week old Cavalier KIng Charles Spaniel. She is not really on dry dog food, so I am feeding her milk with a syringe. Can anyone give me tips on how to potty train her. She is so small only 2lbs 6 ounces. She is so adorable and precious. She is laying up on the back of my neck while i am sitting here at the computer.

RE: New Puppy
Puppy food is the best, as milk can give kittens and puppies loose stools. or call your vet and ask. Congrats Grandpa...........He/she should be eating on it's own from a bowl. or if not it was taken from it's mother to soon. usually 8 weeks is the norm........Have had several dogs, We would set the alarm clock or timer for every 2 hrs, and then take the puppy out and tell her to go potty,or go out, always use the same words so they don't become confused. and then after feeding take them out. Some people paper train there dogs, but we never wanted the mess in the house. Good luck. I f any other questions pm me. My neighbor raises and trains German Shepards also has a boarding kennel.

CF,
I hope you're not giving your pup regular milk (cow milk). It's not good for her. She'll get diarrhea. I'd mix just a little water with canned Pedigree (Puppy Formula), chicken or beef. She'll love it -- and get all the nutrition she needs!

RE: New Puppy
Good post Wink,

What was the breeder feeding her? Puppys should be feed 2 or three times a day, and never from the table , or any people food. Chocolate can kill a dog, get yourself a good book on dogs/puppys.

RE: New Puppy
The Pup will not starve it's self. A good Puppy dry dog food is the best, a little warm water to soften it up a little. Always feed a dog fiber foods and not grains, as grains are a waste, as they go in and come out, and don't do anything for the dog. You will have to read labels, to get the ones without grains. You don't need the milk, as the others told, this dog will squirt all over the place, not good for the pup neither. Even though it's small, doesn't mean it won't feed it's self. It will. I put small dogs in a used Play-pen. Feed them, and run them out the door, and praise them for doing business outside. Eye contact is the very first form a pup training. Then hand to eye contact. That takes a few weeks and will give you time to work on that for now.

RE: New Puppy
You can always try crate training. You keep the puppy in the crate at night and when having naps. Once in the crate with the door closed, she will automatically cry when she wants to get out to go to the loo. No matter how young, a puppy will not want to make a mess in their sleeping area. I have done this with two puppies and it works well. The only problem is that you will have to put the crate either in the bedroom with you, or nearby so that you can hear her cry. Automatically take her outside for a wee, or what ever else she needs to do. Always use the same wording you choose for going potty. I used, "Go Potty". Eventually she will connect those words with going out to go potty. Usually a puppy will need to go potty straight after eating. So you can put her out as soon as she has finished eating and again use those special commands.

The good thing about crate training, is that she sees that as her "safe place", a place where she can go to be alone and sleep...or during thunder storms etc.

Best of luck with the new addition to your family. A lot of hard work, but well worth it in the end.

RE: New Puppy
We've crate trained all of our dogs, never had a single problem. As BPA said, they won't mess where they sleep. It's also a good way to teach an animal where their home is.

RE: New Puppy
Congrats on the new puppy! I'm in favor of crate training. Just make the crate a happy place and don't forget to put in some doggie toys. Dogs feel secure in a more confined place. Good luck! Tongue

RE: New Puppy
Great posts.....My dog years ago had 2 litters and so did my cat. Never milk.....My daughter crate trained her pup and it worked great. She also put bells on her back door and now that the dog is 3 he still rings the bells when he needs to go out. Worked wonderfully

God is never late.

In the end it doesn't matter how many years were in your life but how much life was in your years.

RE: New Puppy
I got My Cocker Spaniel at 9 Weeks, and Fed Her Dry Food, and a Container of Ceasers Puppy Food for a Year. The Dry Food and Fresh Water is always Full. As far as House Training, My System usually Takes 3 Days to a Week, Depending on the Dog. Every Hour an a Half at First I Take the Pup Out on a Leash, and We don't come back in until They go, and Then I Fall all Over Them and Give Them a Treat. It isn't Long that They get the Idea that to get Back into the House, They have to go!! It's Worked Great for Me, and when Lucy Hit a Year Old, I Continue the Wet Food Once a day, with the Dry always Full! Good Luck!!Wink
