Turning Back Time
Could not sleep tonight. I have been up all night.. looking on the internet and reading about the first retail company i worked for. You people on here especially from Oklahoma will remember TG&Y Stores. some of your parents and even your selfs may have worked for them to. I have found a lot to read on them, How about Hobby Lobby founded in a TG&Y Store Managers garage there in OK CIty, with a 600.00 loan. Don't think that could happen again today in retail Where did all those good old stores and times go...Wal-mart came to town and people stopped shopping at our stores.. so we faded away and never made it to the 21st century. Do any of you on here have any good stories about there local TG&Y Stores, to share I would love to hear some of them..

RE: Turning Back Time
TG&Y was the only dime store in our town for many years. If you needed something, that is where you went.
This was before the Dollar Store & Wal Mart. I worked at a coffee shop accross the road from the store, and became friends with many of the employees. |

;)Workmans comp is not a road you want to travel alone. You need a good lawyer,a great family and good friends to lean on.If you make it thru without losing everything you have worked for all your life, you have come out ahead of the game.....

RE: Turning Back Time
Good Morning all... for me, there was only a co op for years and it is still there. If you wanted grain food for the family you went to the top floor. If you wanted to buy a butter maker of something of that sorts or canning jars etc..you went to the top floor, but if you need a salk lick or Barb wire fensing, or grain for you animals of any kind then you went to the basement where out the back you could pull up and load all your animal goodies.... we even bought baby chicks there from time to time. Wow... now those are the memories... we did have a store where there was a fountain for fountain drinks... we would sit at the bar as a family and have a hamburger, a fountain drink or milk shake and some home made french fries... that was on every pay day until we started school then it started on the week ends... usually saturday since sunday was only for church.... nice thread..memories..wow am I getting old. RE: Turning Back Time
I also use to love TG&Y stores. I was another one that bought all my 45 records there, I use to just love to go in there and look on every isle to see what I could find. I also use to purchase all my school supplies there when time to return to school. It was the best place to buy school supplies and the store was always overflowing with people doing the same thing.....school supply shopping. Those were the good old days. Another trip down memory lane is what you just gave me Cervical_Fusion.....thanks. God Bless.

RE: Turning Back Time
This memory lane, put the food on my table for many years. It bought Xmas at my house untill my oldest was 8 years old.. I use to take my kids to work with me and they would straghten my entire tory dept for me... I mention TG&Y Stores to them today and they look at me and say who's that... Boy guess they don't realize who pd the hospital bill when they were born, and bought those clothes they wore home from the hospital. God that was the good days in my life...But yet there were some asses who worked for that company to.
Yesterday I had to attend a DR hearing that SSDI scheduedl me to go to, I had to fill out about 10 pgs of paper and take with me to this Dr. (which actually went good, said he would write them a letter in my favor) but on those papers I had to list all previous jobs and employers, Well I put down that I was a store manager for TG&Y Stores for 15 yrs, this Dr looks at me and ask whos is TG&Y Stores. I just looked at him... like how old are you.....Those were the good old days... putting out the 45's, putting out a swiming pool at easter and filling it with easter chickens and ducks..I always did a give away ever holiday, and the kids would love it when i called them and told them they won a Cabbage Patch Doll or a Bicycle etc.. God I miss that job and those days...But Wal-Mart came along. Cervical Fusion 2003, c5-c6. Herniated and damaged Disc L1- L4-L5 S1. Lumbar Spinal Cord stimulator implant 09-2008. RE: Turning Back Time
I knew the manager of our local TG&Y very well. Our boys were good friends from preschool on. Well Mr. G has passed on now, (he didn't become a dad or get married until later in life), but I think of him everytime I see my boys "Cabbage Patch Dolls". One Christmas every store was out of them, and Mr. G. opened up his store for me, and opened up his shipment of the dolls and let me take my pick. He wasn't supposed to open the box until the day before Christmas. The dolls came with names and birth certificates but I can't remember what they were right now. Mr. G was the nicest man and everyone loved him.
Also next door to TG&Y was Thrifty's Drug Store (Now Rite Aide). They still sell those fabulous cones with the brand name of Thrifty's. Used to walk there with my boyfriend (now husband) for icecream. Good memories! Let Go, and Let God...... |
