RE: Carpal tunnel/Life after surgery
Bummer... I believe that UA and BB have given you some excellent ideas on what kind of exercise to do, but I also believe that a session or two of OT is appropriate here. Call your doctor as you were going too and let him know that you need this assistance. OT works with fine motor activities while PT works with gross motor activities... consequently, if you are referring to stenghtning in your hand and fingers then OT is your answer. If you are referring to arm muscles strengthing then you need PT...however, while you could do both, OT is most likely the best shot to give you the exercises that you need..... good luck bummer...love Red

RE: Carpal tunnel/Life after surgery
Thank you Red
I worry about the strength returning in the left hand & wrist. I had moderate carpal tunnel of the left hand & wrist. The right is much worse according to the surgeon. The surgeon told me last week I only have estimated use of 10 weeks left of the other hand before I need surgery. ( The surgeon examined the hand and then made the statement) |

RE: Carpal tunnel/Life after surgery
Bummer,
Everyone has given you great exercises to do at home. I had OT with my first 2 carpal surgeries and no therapy at all for the last one (which was more involved, than only the carpal). My surgeon told me that I was to keep moving my fingers and doing the finger touches as was mentioned earlier. When I felt up to it (after a couple weeks) I began making tighter fists and also holding and squeezing a ball. I have a lot of scar tissue built up in this(left) hand, since this was the 2nd. surgery on it. I still feel the lumps and have loss of strength as well as pain. In August it will be a year.I'm hoping that your feeling better and heal quicker than me. Bear in mind that my first 2 (1 each hand) surgeries healed fine. Everyones differant. Love Vickie |

RE: Carpal tunnel/Life after surgery
Bummer,
So it sounds like you will be needing surgery on your other hand as well. My sister had both of her's done in a months time. She was in 2 big cast up to the elbow and could not wipe her own butt for a while. Did you have a cast on your, I don't remember? It sounds like you have some exercises to do. My sis went to PT 3 times a week for a very long time because she had scar tissue problems that had formed. Another thing you might ask your doctor for is a script for the parafin wax to use at home. You put your hands in it and it makes like a hot glove and then you remove it. Don't know all the details. My sis claims this helped her quite a bit and she still does it at home. Your doctor will know what you are talking about if you ask him about it. Praying that your recovery will continue on a positive path. Take care and God Bless.
