RE: just curious
when you have reached Maximum Medical Improvement your doctor will perform an impairment rating. the rating will be used to calculate additional benefits called permanent partial disability.
the greater the impairment, the higher the rating ,and the longer the benefits will last. If your doctor can't or won't give the work comp commission a rating they will schedule one with a Independent Medical Examiner.

RE: just curious
Some states offer those who have a measurable loss to their limbs, due to their injury, a one time award. The amount is determined by the rating that either the patient's main doctor gives them or the insurance company will assign a Dr. to give them. (Of course it is better if your own dr. will do it. If he/she does not do ratings, you or your lawyer can always get a referal from your dr. to see a Dr. that will do ratings...so that you do not have to go to one that is given to you by the co's. ins. company.)

Anyway, like 1171 said, this all takes place, once your medical treatment comes to an end and you have received your MMI, from your Dr. That is when the Dr. has tried everything and agrees that there is no longer anything else they can do to help you.
