Help with carpal tunnel
I have bilateral carpal tunnel.

I started wearing bilateral braces for the CT last week.

Previous to wearing the braces I would wakeup 2-3 times a night from problems with the CT but always managed to go back to sleep.

I am having problems wearing the right braces, I can make it to midnight or 1:00 but have to take the brace off as the pain from wearing the brace will not allow me to sleep.

I tried adjusting the straps on the brace but getting no relief from doing so.

What am I doing wrong?

I see the doctor in 2 weeks.

RE: Help with carpal tunnel
Bummer the only bilateral braces for the CT that I know of, have the thumb seperated with it's own part on the brace.

Is this the type brace your wearing at night?

Oh, and where is your pain?

Where is your hand positioned?

Bummer, I'm going off line for tonight. Catch you in the morning.

Elevate hand with a pillow. Apply heat before bed time. Apply heat in morning to free it up.

RE: Help with carpal tunnel
BB,

What you are referring to is a SPICA thumb brace. I had to wear one when I had the traumatic crush injury and later surgery back in Vegas.

And yes, BK, BB is right on the money. If you are having trouble sleeping with the brace, put a pillow sideways in front of you, closer to the top of your head than your waist and sleep with your hand on it. By elevating your hand above your heart, it helps with the swelling. As will the ice. But I found that a moist heating pad worked best, as it allowed the blood vessels and such to dialate, allowing more blood to flow through them and aiding in the healing process. It also might help if you were to get a sling to put at least the worst hand in and rest it at heart level during the day when you can go for a while not using that hand.

I've always been crazy, but it keeps me from going insane.

RE: Help with carpal tunnel
Thanks UA & BB

I do use a pillow but not as you suggested, will try it.

I have a pain patch on now & have it wraped around my thumb.

My worst hand is the dominate hand.

The other (left) hand I also need surgery on the thumb joint.

Thanks for the info.

Bad Boy

The thumb is seperate in this brace and it is made by Ossur.

I slept with the moist heat and elevation on the pillow.

I was able to leave the brace on longer, until 3:00 A.M.

RE: Help with carpal tunnel
Bummer, here is the web site for Ossur, I have no clue to which one you may have. But, I still didn't see where they carry a bilateral brace for the wrist/carpal tunnel. Please go to the link and see if you can point out your brace.

http://www.ossur.com/bracesandsupports/wrist

This is one of the bilateral brace for the wrist that I know of, the other bilateral brace that I know of looked much like what is called a smart glove.

http://www.healthdesign.net/products/ipa...-1030.html

When I was told I had to wear a bilateral brace for my carpal tunnel, it had to be made, and it was hard, with velcro staps on it. It was made to the form of my hand, wrist, and lower forearm.

RE: Help with carpal tunnel
It looks like the first one, the contoured wrist/forearm brace.

When I say bilateral, I have braces for both hands.

I do have problems wearing the left brace. May be due to needing surgery on the the thumb joint. Ortho says the joint is worse then my knee was before surgery,

RE: Help with carpal tunnel
Did anyone size you up for either Brace. The size is very, very important? And not much room from one size to the next.

It is just possible you may want to try the Smart Glove with Thumb support. See web link, you will see what I'm getting at.

http://www.activeforever.com/p-731-smart...?cs=A12146

Also on the Smart Glove web site, it shows you how to measure for the correct size, as one hand/wrist can be a different size from the other.
