I think if you have any operation where they place metal hardware in your body you would qualify to have antibiotics.
ACDF is Anterior Cervical Discography Fusion (with instrumentation - hardware)

Not quite sure about the Discography part but I think I'm right Big Grin

I have no metal hardware , but I do have a heart valve implant . i must take a antibiotic burst before and after any dental appmnt. Also, if you have a heart murmur, you must take antiboitics before and after dental appmnts.

tpm....consider yourself fortunate...you have a dentist that is watching out for your best interest!

The reason for the antibiotics is simple. Whenever they work in your mouth, cleaning, fillings, crown work etc...there is a chance they can poke you with a handheld instrument, which introduces bacteria into your system. The bacteria can land in weakened areas...such as the heart, joints, where ever there is an implant or hardware.... and then one REALLY has a problem.

Buildergirl....make sure your dentist knows about the foot several days PRIOR to any appmnt, he can make the call if you need antibiotics or not. Or simply ask your treating doctor if it's necessary in your case.
