I will mention it to my doctor this morning as the appointment is at 8am. I too have RSD in my dominant hand and not finding any relief. The only thing that ever worked for me was methadone and I ended up with a rash from that. I really wish I could try it again to see if I would be okay using it or if the rash will happen again.

You mentioned Morphine. How is that helping with Pain? I am on oxycontin 40 mg 2 x's a day and percs 3-4 times a day for break through pain. I am right now finding nothing is helping me and after the death of my cousin last week on Oxycontin I want to get off and QUICK. It just scares me to death now.

I am looking directly at the paperwork that was given to me by the pharmacy when I picked up the scrip for zonegran. Underside effects it lists not only loss of appetite, but weight loss. It also states that many of the side effects will dissappear over time as you continue taking the medication. I have been on zonegran since December 8th, and still have loss of appetite as well as weight.

As far as it being for seizures, the reason I am on it for RSD is because it controls abnormal electrical activity in the brain. More or less helping to block the pain signals that reach the brain from the RSD.

The morphine that I am on is called Kadian and like other medications, it has it's days when it works good and others when it doesn't seem to help at all. I have been on it since March 2008, gradually working from 20 mgs to 30 and now at 50 2x's a day. It is a time release capsule. My body has become adjusted to that doesage and rather than up my amount, my PM Dr wants me to look into getting an SCS placed in my back. I talk to the Dr that would do it on Thursday. I'm not sure if I want an invasive procedure as it could cause the RSD to spread further into my body. And from everything I have read, it only works for about 50% of the people that try it. Of course, I have to wait and see if my insurance is going to approve the SCS before I even really have to worry about having it done, as there is no way that I could pay for it on my own.

Hey there,
Well im even more confused today then I was yesterday Sad I had been told by 1 WComp Attorney that the 30 day time frame didn't matter since my problem started in Aug 2008 and has gotten worse because of my job being Repetitive. So today I get a call from another WComp Attorney and he said that I needed to report it back then and now its too late. I told him that I had mentioned the problem to HR at work but never filed WComp paperwork but I have had a brace on ever since Aug. I did tell HR & my Boss last week that I thought I needed to file WComp.
In Aug it just started with finger pain and has just recently gotten much worse. The WComp Attorney I talked to tonight said I can go ahead and still file the claim,but that doesn't mean it will be handled under WComp. It seems like its always something to deal with and like I said before,The owner of the company I work for will fire anyone just because he feels like it.Since ive been there I have seen so many people get fired or quit just because of him.ve never had any problems with him,But when he gets in a Fireing mood.....Look Out. If anyone knows for sure if there is a 30 day time frame to report a claim,then what are my options??

Two TN statutes regarding WC claims:

50-6-201. Notice of injury.

(a) Every injured employee or such injured employee's representative shall, immediately upon the occurrence of an injury, or as soon thereafter as is reasonable and practicable, give or cause to be given to the employer who has no actual notice, written notice of the injury, and the employee shall not be entitled to physician's fees or to any compensation that may have accrued under the provisions of the Workers' Compensation Law, compiled in this chapter, from the date of the accident to the giving of such notice, unless it can be shown that the employer had actual knowledge of the accident. No compensation shall be payable under the provisions of this chapter, unless such written notice is given the employer within thirty (30) days after the occurrence of the accident, unless reasonable excuse for failure to give such notice is made to the satisfaction of the tribunal to which the claim for compensation may be presented.

(b) In those cases where the injuries occur as the result of gradual or cumulative events or trauma, then the injured employee or such injured employee's representative shall provide notice to the employer of the injury within thirty (30) days after the employee:

(1) Knows or reasonably should know that such employee has suffered a work-related injury that has resulted in permanent physical impairment; or


(2) Is rendered unable to continue to perform such employee's normal work activities as the result of the work-related injury and the employee knows or reasonably should know that the injury was caused by work-related activities.


50-6-128. Penalty for employer causing compensable claim to be paid by insurance or failing to provide necessary medical treatment.

If any employer knowingly, willfully, and intentionally causes a medical or wage loss claim to be paid under health or sickness and accident insurance, or fails to provide reasonable and necessary medical treatment, including a failure to reimburse when the employer knew that the claim arose out of a compensable work-related injury and should have been submitted under its workers' compensation insurance coverage, then a civil penalty of five hundred dollars ($500) shall be assessed against such employer, and the employer may not offset any sickness and accident income benefit paid to the employee against its temporary total disability benefit payment liability due to the employee pursuant to the provisions of this chapter. The commissioner of labor and workforce development has the authority to assess and collect such civil penalty.


File your claim. When injuries are due to repetitive trauma, usually the reporting period starts when you become aware that it is work related. Also, the time period usually does not apply if the employer had knowledge. The statute above sounds like this applies to your case.

They may deny your claim, but if you don't file, you will lose your chance.

Make note of everything. When did the doctor first tell you it was work-related? When and to whom did you tell at work about this?

If your injury is work-related, health insurance usually will not pay it. If your WC claim is denied, then they usually will. But, your deductibles are still there, you do not get paid for time lost from work, etc.

The longer you wait, the harder everything will be.

I am dealing with Carpal Tunnel/Tendonytis and Trigger fingers since 2004. I had five surgeries on both hands in 2005 and 2006 and have more problems than ever, even though I don't even work since 2006.

My job(medical billing) required 7-8 hours a day of data entry and after several months of pain and wearing the bracelet not helping at all, I just filed the claim and so my date of injury began on that day, even though my pain started like four months before that. My doctor, who is not a wc approved provider, filed the paperwork and referred me to a specialist.
My claim was accepted and after going through cortizone shots and physical therapy(I was still working full time at the same job), I was referred to a surgeon, who told me, I needed surgery, but he also told me, I needed to find a different type of job.
After having surgery and taking one month off to recoup, I went back to same job and my employer not wanting to fire me for legal reasons, tried to force me out by doubling my work load. The tendonytis turned to carpal tunnel, and also to trigger finger. After having surgeries for these, taking one month out from work again, I again went back to same job as I had no choice. My employer still tried to force me out by giving me even more work and because I still couldn't use my right hand completely, used my left hand more and developed carpal tunnel and trigger fingers on that hand, also.
After having surgeries on left hand also and not able to do the work any longer, my employer not wanting to meet restrictions, fired me(after my fmla was up).

Now, after more than four years of the injury, I am having more problems than ever. I can't lift my arms over my shoulders, my hands constantly go numb, I still dropp things, my fingers get so stiff I have to use the other hand to straighten them out. Pain wakes me up at night, can't sleep on my side due to pain in shoulders. Can't do many things what I enjoyed doing before, such as gardening, baking, playing tennis etc.

W/c denied all medical since 2006, so I had to hire a lawyer and it is constant fight ever since. I am going through the second year of vocational rehab, which is other story as they try to push me back to same line of work what I used to do, even though I can't even hold a pen longer than two minutes.
Right now, they try to send me to this pain clinic for some therapy, but it is more like work conditioning, than therapy. The clinic refused to admit me without additional tests as they can see some red flaggs regarding my condition, so finally w/c approved mri on my neck and emg. I just had the mri yesterday, not sure about the result yet, but my claims adjuster wrote, she approved these tests as diagnostical tools only, not approving any treatment if some is still needed.

Sorry, my story became this long, just tried to share my experience warning you do not delay filing the claim. If you do, you can end up having trouble not only with your right hand, but also with your left. And maybe, you will loose your job anyway as many of us did. I am really sorry I didn't take my surgeon's advise at the beginning, when he advised me to look for a different type of work. At that time, I thought keeping my job and keeping my house was more important than anything. It turned out, I lost both my job and my house anyway, but most important, I lost the good health what I enjoyed so long.

Hello and Thanks for all the help in this issue!! I really appreciate "Everyone's Comments"

I went to work today and went right into the Hr department and told her I wanted to file the claim for WComp because I know its job related. She said ok,Let me get the paperwork.A few minutes went by and she came to my desk and filled out the form. The form asked when I 1st went to the Dr. which was in August and who the Dr was/Phone # etc and what kind of injury it was and I believe she put Right Hand Injury. Then Im assuming she faxed it someplace. I then asked her what do I need to do next and she said just wait until WComp contacts either her or me.
So is this how it starts out? When can I go see a Nuerologist for tests etc? Id appreciate knwing how the process goes.

I guess the reason I really didn't file a claim before now was because I had NO idea it would get worse and I would start having issues like Stiffness,Swelling,Pain,Lack of mobility etc. I had NO idea Carpal Tunnel could cause such problems. And its not like they didn't know I had a problem because ive been in the Brace since August and even mentioned things to them about being worried to file WComp. Anyway Im glad I found this forum were people are willing to help.
For those of you that are suffering,Im sooooo sorry for you and I hope your recovery comes soon.

I have another question!! I got a letter from my work insurance that I guess my Internal Medicine Dr submitted to them. Its asking me if the treatment I received on Aug 2 2008 for what she diagonosed as Carpal Tunnel was work related or otherwise and I haven't sent it bck to them. If I fill it out and send it in saying it is a work related injury and then WComp doesn't except my claim, will I still be able to be seen for this using my work insurance that I pay for??? I hope im not confusing anyone!!

If you have a denied claim from workers comp, then yes, you can use personal insurance to pay for treatment of the injury. But I wouldn't give up on getting it accepted as a W/C injury. In the end, if you can get it claimed as WC, then the IC for WC will have to repay your insurance company for all exenses for your care, as well as reimburse you for co-pays and medication you pay out of pocket.

I have been fighting a denied claim since March 08..filed in February. Because of the denied claim and being taken off of work on 26 August 2008, I am currently collecting short term disability. If and when my claim is approved, then the monies that I would have collected while on TTD with WC will have to be paid to the STD company, other than my travel pay. I've been waiting to get an MRI approved, on contingency, of my right shoulder and elbow since October. And after driving to Dallas/Ft Worth yesterday to see the Dr and get another out of work note for the next month, I finally got the call and will have to drive to Arlington on Thursday for the MRI's.

Per an agreement between my attorney and the IC's attorney..if anything abnormal shows on either MRI..my claim will be automatically accepted by the IC and I will finally be able to begin treatment for it. I will also receive my travel reimbursement check for over a grand within 30 days. If nothing shows, then we will have to file a contested claim hearing and go in front of a judge and let him decide if this is WC or not. I am hoping that isn't the case as it is getting harder and harder each day to use my hand and arm, and I am right hand dominant.

Last April I filed workers comp (WC) as I could no longer feel with my right hand and my left hand was also getting worse with the numbness due to carpal tunnel. The thumb on my right hand also had "trigger" finger, so that was taken care of. I has surgery on my right hand in June and on the left hand in November. I am still on WC as the left hand is still healing. Although my right hand is much better, and the thumb, the little finger now has the "trigger" finger and I may need surgery on that. This whole process has taken alot longer than I anticipated. In September, due to this long process, I was lost my job of 17 years. Some people are lucky to have their jobs held for them, but the majority lose their jobs. Have a firm understanding with your employer that you will not lose your job if you use WC for your hands. If you do not file WC, you will have to take care of your hands with your own medical benefits. The carpal tunnel syndrome can be taken care of with physical therapy if you catch it on time.
What I would like to know if anyone reading this, has had CTS surgery and experienced complications afterward.

Im new to this Forum and I need some Help/Advice if possible. I started a new job in Feb of 2008 in a Medical Office in Middle TN. I am a receptionist but job requires me to not only answer phones, But to also do lots of paperwork and entering things in the computer for 8 hours a day,every day,5 days a week. I never had any type of problem with my hand,wrist or fingers until recently.I have to use a Staple removal tool all day long to remove tons of staples from paperwok before I scan & enter the info into a computer which triggered the Finger pain etc.
It 1st started with pain in my Ring finger closest to my pinky on my Right hand. After my hand started swelling and having constant pain, I couldn't understand what was happening so I went to see my reg internal medicicine Dr. who did some tests and determined I may have Carpal Tunnel. She gave me meds and put me in a Carpal Tunnel brace which I have worn ever since seeing her. This was almost 3-4 months ago.I have not been back to see her. I have now lost almost all use of my Right Hand and I am Right Handed.The pain is so bad that I can't even make a fist because of the swelling and can't lift or grab anything or even hold a pen to sign my name. My elbow has also started hurting too. I have not filed W Comp because of being afraid of getting fired.I have told HR at my job and my boss that I may be filing W Comp. I spoke to a W Comp attorney Friday who told me I definately need to file a W Comp claim because the type of work I do is called Repetitive Motion Syndrome. Im just afraid and don't know what to expect. Im planning on filing W Comp on Monday.I haven't stopped working and have been working and dealing with the pain while wearing a brace. Any advice is most appreciated.Im soooo Sorry this is so long. I hope someone can help me.Thanks for reading this.

How long after your first CT surgery did you have the reoccurrance? I had CT surgery on my right hand in June. Also had trigger finger in the thumb and surgery on that at the same time. The right hand and thumb are much better, but now the little finger has the trigger issue. I had surgery on my left hand in November and that is still healing. I read that some with CT and who had surgery, healed in a month or less. My right hand needed at least 10-12 weeks for healing. What was your healing time? I know each person is different with healing, but I'm just curious what the norm seems to be. Also, do you know what the percentage is for those who have had to have more than the one surgery performed on their hands/fingers?
What is RSD?
