Injured Workers Who Keep In Shape???
I'm wondering how many of us IW's keep up an exercise regimen, or do something to try to stay in some sort of good physical shape while off work. I know I gained 40 lbs. due to inactivity and now I am fighting a losing battle trying to take it off. Dieting alone doesn't do it. You have to be as physically active as you possibly can with the injuries you have. It might be worth it to talk to a physical therapist and ask about what is "safe" for you to do at home.

This article about what Alabama is doing to obese workers by making them pay part of their health insurance is an interesting concept, and possible a trend setter. Read on down if you want a chucke about Arnold and his many medical prodedures..........

RE: Injured Workers Who Keep In Shape???
I gained about 15 lbs, altough I also quit smoking. For my last birthday, I asked for a bike and I try to ride it once in while. I also take the dog for a 2 hour walk each day, but he is slowing down, due to being old. I wish to loose at least 10 lbs, but have hard time to do it. Maybe when I move to this private camp ground I can ride my bike more and loose more wait.

RE: Injured Workers Who Keep In Shape???

Chris...I gained a total of 40 pounds since DOI. My PCP told me upfront this would happen. I had a very physical job and then couldn't excerise or work. ALong with this I went through Meno and quit smoking. Meno was good for 15 and smoking under 10. The rest was from lack of work and excercising. I am now in an aquatic PT program and work really hard. I cannot understand eating well and starting to work out 3 xs a week for an hour each time for 6-8 weeks now and I haven't lost one pound. I have to keep at it or I can't walk but I am very disappointed that it hasn't helped to take a pound off. I am having a hard time accepting the extra weight but am trying really hard.

RE: Injured Workers Who Keep In Shape???
I gained 17 pounds after my injury in 2005. I had problems walking and always found something to do while sitting down.

Since my knee replacement surgery 2 months ago I am down one pant size, I just didn't feel like eating for a long time after surgery.

I was released from physical therapy last Friday and plan on joining the local YMCA to continue and work on physical therapy goals. I also am checking into the water exercise class for those with medical conditions.

Hello Friends,
I also have put on about 10-15 lbs in 4 months because of my injury.I went by Drs.orders did PT for a month and that seemed to worsen my pain in my back so I told him about this and he said no more .PT at home program try and do what you can he says?Have a tens unit, meds.someone gave me a treadmill(5 min and my back locks up)Dr.Says TIME is the answer??So I take my meds do as much PT as I can and try to do things like mowing the lawn(10 min with a self propelled)and thats it after meds. This TIME THING the Dr.seems to think is the answer doesnt seem like the answer to me.I feel like going outside more and trying to do more activity to lessen my weight but like the link I feel like the insurance co. will come and film me when I am trying to get outside exercise and try and do things like a normal person would do if you know what I am saying?Well everyone Take Care,Born

Cap...hang in there sweetie. What's happening is muscle weighs more than fat so as you tone up, you're actually losing...but the scale isn't showing it. You'll find that your clothes will fit looser even when the scale is being mean and nasty!!!

RE: Injured Workers Who Keep In Shape???
Also, if you are taking opiate based pain medications on a daily basis they will cause you to gain weight. I've gained a bit taking them. When I taper off or just flat go cold turkey the weight starts coming off pretty quick. But then again I go on the two step diet program. Step 1. Eat less. Step 2. Move more.

RE: Injured Workers Who Keep In Shape???
Thanks Snowbear..I was hoping that's what it was. Very defeating. Some of my clothes are a little looser. Between my limitations, age and diabetes I don't expect anything to happen quickly but would like to see some difference. Even if it's not to be seen. Better glucose control, better BP, a little lower cholestrol. SOMETHING !!! LOL
