RE: NEVER ENDING NEED
jayne Wrote:TO FEED........... went to a chicken auction last nite to get eggs to put in my incubator..(it takes 15 dozen at a time)..and felt sorry for this UGLY mule....now for you city people a mule is a mix between a donkey and a horse.....yes they are ugly but this one was really ugly and starved looking he hadnt been brushed since last winter if at all and he had clumps of winter hair still attached and some spots where the winter coat had fallen off and he was hungry (I could tell) and well Quietdude has problems getting all the lawn done and the kids have been asking for a horse and well he is now in my back pasture.......
To let you know how bad it is here for the farmers alot of people are selling their ducks, geese and chickens because they cant afford to feed em.....last nite ducks and geese were going for less than what a new (one day old)hatchling was selling for last year and good laying hens that only a month ago were going for 18 dollars each were going for 3.50 to 7 dollars...its a shame...but corn to feed em is so hi many just cant do it.....I came home with 22 new laying hens..Domeneckers and silver laced wyendots I shouldnt have been able to touch em for less than 15 to 18 dollars and got them for 5 each.......and they are pullets(not yet old enough to lay but soon) ...and the white or brown hens were going for even less......it was so sad to see these old people selling out their chickens...... Mine are free range which means mine roam the farm and eat bugs and grass so I dont feed much..(it also gives em a deep yellow to orange yolk)....and even in our mild winters there is lots of things for them to eat....now that the country lesson is over I will sit back and watch my chickens run to and fro eating all the bugs on my farm

RE: NEVER ENDING NEED
I have never lived on a real farm or raised real farm animals but I think I would love to sit and enjoy the view as well. I do love animals though and love to hear stories like this that show the compassion others have for them as well. I have 2 dogs, 3 cats, 2 birds, 2 snakes and a lizzard that we acquired yesterday. All my pets are rescues...except for one of my dogs...brindle boxer I bought cause I always wanted one. I had a fawn boxer that was inching towards elderlyhood and I knew the day was going to come soon so I thought I better get something to ease the hurt and fill the void before it appeared. At that time, I only had the 1 dog. So I bought the brindle boxer as a pup and it was the best thing I ever did. 2 years later, I had to put my precious Pebbles down and my MIA (named for the soldiers in Iraq) did a good job filling that void. Since then I aquired a chihuahua "Shrinky" who is the love of my life!! Oh hell who am I foolin...I love them all!!
Nice story Jayne Smile

RE: NEVER ENDING NEED
Hi Jayne

Thought I'd post about our pigs.

Remember the runt my daughter adopted and bottle fed. Well, it's almost as big as the others now.
It's about time for my kids to start trainning the pigs as they will be judged in heardsmanship at the 4-H fair.
