why spinal fusion and not disc replacement?
Hello everyone, every since my dr. recommended a spinal fusion for my problem, i have been reading up on disc replacement, and it seems like a better success rate than spinal fusion. 3/26/08 i had a discectomy bc of the herniated disc, now my mri shows herniated disc and swolen nerve at l5-s1. my pain level is pretty hign, in fact i ate lorcet plus 2 every 4-6 hours for pain and now i have to wait 48 hrs to get refill. (i was taking them because it was necessary)i really need some input about the disc replacement if anyone has any.
l5-s1 discectomy with pain in the butt immediately after surgery, 03/26/08 constant pain in leg,and hip, global spinal fusion 10/06/08, now leg and hip pain, butt bone, low back, upper back, pain (state of georgia) |

RE: why spinal fusion and not disc replacement?
My work comp insurance company would not pay for a disc replacement surgery. They said it was still too soon and not enough time tested. They would rather pay more money on a fusion surgery where they have proven results than on what they call an experimental surgery. At least that's what they told me.

I had a 2 level fusion on Nov 1st, 2006. The IC. was West Bend from Wisconsin. They would not pay for a disc replacement surgery. |

RE: why spinal fusion and not disc replacement?
i here that if you have bad disc in a row they can not put in a replacement disc, they have to be apart.that what my dr said.im fused from S-1-L-4 and soon L-3.he said it can not be done on back to back disc.
Each day is not a rite,it's a given. |

I had 2 dik replacement L4/5-L5/S1, They are allowed to do multiple but it is up to the surgeon. Prior to my surgery I called the manufacturer do to the same concern and they confirmed that it is not always the best choice but it can be done. Some of you long time members may remember I went in on Valentines day back in 06. - (Stillwaiting) Over 2 years have passed and the surgery failed, I'm waiting on the approval for a Fusion that the ic is refusing. |
